The week of September 8-14th has been declared National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week, in an effort to recognize and express appreciation for the work of community providers supporting our friends, family and neighbors with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities.
The Arc Mid-Hudson employs over 900 direct support staff. Our direct support staff includes residential specialists, program specialists, community habilitation specialists, recreation specialists and job coaches. Some of their daily responsibilities may include helping a person learn to cook a meal, navigate their community by using a local bus, discover local non-profits that need volunteers, read a menu at their favorite restaurant or master a new task at their place of employment.
Each support staff work together on focusing to ensure that all people with disabilities are respected as individuals, are empowered to make choices, big and small, and to learn the skills they need to improve their engagement and productivity in everyday life.
“Direct Support Professionals are the backbone of our organization. They drive our mission sometimes under difficult circumstances. Today, this week, and all year. I salute you for your dedication, hard work, professionalism and compassion. You truly are making a difference in people’s lives and I thank you for all of the great work that you do. Thank you!” – John McHugh, Executive Director
During National Direct Support Professionals Week, The Arc Mid-Hudson encourages everyone to learn about the supports provided by DSPs and help us advocate for public policies that will improve the lives of many people. Every citizen should know the vital work performed by DSPs and ensure those services are available when they or someone they know need them.
